Where are driverless cars even legal?

We've got the answer. These are the states where driverless cars AKA self-driving cars AKA autonomous cars AKA robot cars are legal (FL is more progressive than you think), not legal and in-legislation. Also shown are the states with no legislation at all.

I started to say something along the lines of F Florida, then I realized this is actually a good thing given how many people have no clue how to drive in this state. Especially if these cars are programed never to get in the left lane unless they are doing at least 5 over the posted limit.

I call malarkey on one point. Texas' Legislature is not in session, and the bill introduced during last session (2013) stalled in the House Transportation Committee. It's not in legislation; it's dead (until 2014 Session, at least).

It'll probably feel like a speed bump; I am in Houston and sometimes... sometimes you just gotta wonder if the shitty roads were done purposely for the sake of slowing down police chases or if they're just too busy arguing about transgenders and the bathroom.
"The roads are like Cambodia and needs repair. Hell, a Google self-driving car got swallowed in!"
"That's great... And may I bring to the Counsel's attention to the next on the agenda... Transgender and bathrooms..."
"Wait, what are we going to do about the roads?"
"Those in favor of Transgender use of bathrooms, say 'I'"
"....."

Lots of unanswered questions about driverless cars. Those two are good ones, as well as the minimizing damage types of questions (family of 7 walking on the road, should the car drive off a cliff to avoid them?)

why the hell would you want driverless cars to be illegal??? The more jack asses we can have not driving on public roads the better. Leaves room for us people who actually enjoy driving to do so. Also, when I travel cross country, I would love to kick back and read or do something besides babysitting the steering wheel.

Pennsylvania will be torn by the Pitt/Philly combo that wants them, and the rural area ("Alabama in-between") won't want them (due to the roadkill problem probably).

that's an easy answer mate, the family shouldn't be on the road in such a manner that a car, regardless of human driver or driver-less, travelling at the legal speed limit whilst obeying all other road laws has no ability to stop in time to avoid them. It'd be a tragedy, but the driver wouldn't be at fault.

Until the day comes that cars you can control go the way of manual windows, keys(instead of fobs), steering(instead of power steering), and soon manual transmission. Most people don't care enough about driving to buy a car that they have to drive when a driverless car becomes cheap and common

Kinja'd!!! MrBowles > Term Derd
06/12/2014 at 15:08

Kinja'd!!!0

Because, just like almost any other time a part of a car goes from manual control to being controlled by the car, it will be replaced and manual controls(or any at all) will die off

06/12/2014 at 19:30

Kinja'd!!!0

True, but what about winter, then all bets are off.

I just fear that some day it will be mandated that all cars must be automated, and I'd rather deal with the idiots then not be able to drive

Kinja'd!!! schwinn8 > M-Powwerr Drives a Ford
06/13/2014 at 08:42

Kinja'd!!!0

Agreed, I fear the day it's mandated. I don't mind having an auto-driving car for commuting, but I hope that I'll be allowed to disable it when I want to drive myself.

As for the safety issue, I agree winter driving may be a problem, but I still might prefer the computer over my fellow drivers. I refer, for example, to the idiot I saw on TV (in the south, granted... during last winter's ice storms) who pulled his emergency brake because his car wasn't stopping on the ice. Why is this considered "acceptable behavior" is beyond me... NEVER pull your ebrake unless you know what you're doing... clearly, in this situation, a computer would have done a better job overall.

Still, my biggest concern right now is that the setup for self-driving cars today is to throw the control back to the "driver" if the computer gets confused. My issue with that is that the already inattentive driver (who also likely is LESS experienced at driving due to the computer) is now being "depended" on to make a last-second emergency decision for a situation that is coming up fast. This is a recipe for an accident. I'd STILL rather the computer do the best it can, as the "driver" who has not been paying attention is the LAST person who should be handed the reins.
